Chris Varnson- Director of Student and Tween Ministries
Chris is from from Pensacola, FL where he worked as the Assistant Director of Youth Ministries at his home church FUMC of Pensacola. While working at his home church and finishing his undergrad at University of West Florida, he worked as a hiking staff during his summers at a backpacking ministry off the AT called Wilderness Trail where he fell in love with the mountains and leading small groups.
After finishing his degree, he decided to further his education and his call into ministry by attending Duke Divinity School where he learned to study the Bible and preach different ways. During his time there, he worked as a pastoral intern at Walnut Grove UMC and a chaplain at Duke University Hospital. He has recently graduated from Duke and decided to stay in this area for a while and what better way than to serve our youth at Hayes Barton.
Some fun facts about Chris are he takes a trip every year with his siblings, he’s allergic to apples, and he loves drive-in movies. If you see him say hello and tell him your name!

Olivia Skaggs- Youth Intern
Olivia Skaggs has grown up at HBUMC alongside her parents and sister. She is a senior at Meredith college and is majoring in Social Work with a minor in Child Development.
In her free time she loves to play guitar, sing, watch “Friends”, shop at Target and hang out with friends. Olivia is passionate about helping others and being a welcoming face to anyone who enters the youth program. She is super excited to be working with us again as our intern this year and be around some awesome people! She can’t wait to get to know you!
